VINEYARDS
The terroir shaping the wine

TERROIR
A winemaking tradition with deep roots
In Kratovo, one of the oldest towns in North Macedonia, the cultivation of grapevines and the art of winemaking have been deeply rooted for centuries. Throughout history, this region has been renowned for its vineyards, where viticulture was far more than an agricultural practice—it was a way of life, passed down from one generation to the next.
Kratovo wines earned a distinguished reputation for their exceptional quality, distinctive character, and authenticity. Crafted using traditional methods and with profound respect for nature and the natural rhythm of the vine, these wines became a symbol of the region and its rich heritage. Every wine-growing household preserved its own knowledge of the perfect harvest and fermentation, producing wines with unmistakable character and a strong sense of local identity.
It is precisely on this rich heritage that the present-day story of the vineyards in Kratovo is built, where tradition merges with modern approaches to viticulture, in order to continue and exalt a long history of quality and dedication to wine.
TERROIR
What makes this place special
In the Kratovo region, at an altitude of 650 meters, the vineyards of the Monteko brand are spread. This altitude plays a key role in the quality of the grapes, the cold nights and moderately warm days allow for slower ripening, which results in a greater concentration of aromas, better natural acidity and a balanced structure of the future wine.
What further sets this wine-growing region apart is its volcanic soil – a rare and extremely valuable basis for top wine production. Volcanic mineral layers give the grapes depth, complexity and a recognizable mineral signature. This soil is naturally rich in elements that stimulate the vine’s root system to grow deeper, resulting in lower yields, but significantly higher quality and intensity of the fruit.
The combination of volcanic soil and 650 meters above sea level creates a unique terroir that is difficult to replicate. It is this natural synergy that allows Monteko’s vineyards to produce grapes with a distinct character, pure varietal aroma and a recognizable structure that is transmitted directly to each wine.

With these vineyards, Monteko builds a philosophy based on the union between nature and human dedication – where the volcanic soil and the mountain altitude are not just conditions, but an essential part of the character of each drop of wine.
